The Big Question: Who will buy my raw fiber?

The purpose of this page is to offer an answer to this question. After talking to several potential buyers, fiber mills and alpaca breeders. I have found very few places that will say that they will buy raw fiber, the ones who do are not large enough to list. Several mills have stated they may be buying in the near future. I will be listing them as soon as they want to be on this page.

In the future there are some mills that may be interested in trading product for service. These businesses would process your fiber and keep some of the finished product to sell in their stores as payment for their services.

The Cottage Industry

Many alpaca sellers quote the value of raw alpaca fiber at $3 to $5 per ounce. The problem is that this price is only paid by some cottage industry artists. When a buyer is found for large quantities of raw fiber the price quoted is only $2 to $5 per pound. Many online stores price alpaca yarn at $15 to $20 per 3.5oz. to 4oz skein.

Yarn at ave. $17 per 4oz skein =  $68 per pound

Raw fiber at $3.5 per oz. ave. = $54 per pound

Raw fiber wholesale  ave. $4 per pound = $4 per pound

This shows the importance of the cottage industry. Alpaca owners who learn the art of spinning, weaving and other crafts have a clear advantage to those who sell their fleece to a wholesale buyer.
